Honoring Native Son, Roger West

At the February 20, 2017, Commission Meeting, Cherokee County Commissioners unanimously adopted the following resolution requesting the naming of bridge number 274 (the bridge accessing the Valley River Casino) in honor of Roger West and the positive impact he has had on Cherokee County and its citizens.


RESOLUTION OF THE CHEROKEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS REQUESTING NCDOT NAME THE BRIDGE AT THE VALLEY RIVER CASINO IN MURPHY NC IN HONOR OF STATE REPRESENTATIVE AND NATIVE SON ROGER WEST

WHEREAS, Roger West has served honorably as our Representative in the North Carolina State Legislature in Raleigh, NC, for the past eighteen years, and

WHEREAS, Roger West has used his intelligence, enthusiasm, knowledge, and leadership skills to impact in a positive manner the lives, fortunes, and well-being of his fellow citizens and constituents of Cherokee County, and

WHEREAS, the Cherokee County Commission agrees to waive and suspend for this specific request its rule against naming bridges for living persons.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners hereby respectfully requests that the North Carolina Department of Transportation name the bridge at the Valley River Casino in Murphy, NC, in honor of Roger West.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a proper and dignified ceremony be held marking the occasion of the naming of that bridge in honor of Roger West on a date and time to be established by mutual agreement of the NC Department of Transportation, the Cherokee County Commission, and the honoree Roger West.
